CAVING AND POTHOLING DESCRIPTION




South Wales is one of the most exciting caving areas in Britain with a great variety of caves and potholes. We can offer caving sessions at all levels and we choose the most appropriate caves to suit the needs of each group.

Take this opportunity to visit the fascinating world of underground Wales and experience the sport of caving as well as seeing what is hidden in the underworld beneath our feet.

Caving can be delivered as a half or whole day activity or as a taster within a Multi-Activity session. It can also be an opportunity to learn skills and as a way of visiting numerous underground sites with experienced and qualified caving Instructors.

Most of the caves of south Wales are horizontal in nature and don’t require vertical skills, making them ideal for both newcomers and experienced cavers who want to travel further underground or visit new sites.

For those interested in vertical underground exploration, we can offer:

CAVING VERTICAL SKILLS TRAINING

Learn the skills of vertical caving with qualified and experienced cave instructors.

This training can include:
  • Safe use of Ladder and Lifeline
  • SRT Training - beginners and improvers
  • Rigging for ladder and lifeline and for SRT
  • Self rescue techniques for ladder and line or SRT

    These courses all include both surface and underground sessions

    CAVE LEADER INSTRUCTOR TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT

    We regularly provide training, assessment and revalidation for the BCA LCMLA Scheme For more information please visit Adventure Wales


    WHO CAN TAKE PART?

    We can accommodate most levels of ability and have worked with all ages although any child under 7 years old should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

    LOCATION OF CAVING AND POTHOLING

    All locations are within the Brecon Beacons National Park. We use a variety of horizontal and vertical caves throughout the limestone areas of the National Park. For example :

    Porth yr Ogof, Bridge Cave, White Lady Cave, Pwll y Rhyd, Town Drain, Wills Hole – Central Area
    Eglwys Faen, Ogof Clogwyn, Ogof Pen Eryr, Ogof Draenen – Eastern Area
    Llygad Llwchwr, Ogof Pasg & Ogof Foel Fawr – Western Area

    DURATION OF CAVING AND POTHOLING DAYS

    Day - 9.30am - 4.30pm
    Half Day - 9.00am - 12.30pm

    CAVING AND POTHOLING SESSION KIT LIST

    We provide all adventure kit for the day but you will need a packed lunch and a complete change of clothing.

    CAN I COMBINE THIS WITH ANY OTHER ACTIVITIES?

    Yes, you can do this as a half day and undertake another activity for the other half day.

    CAN I USE A CAMERA / CAMCORDER

    Yes, though we would suggest only robust compact cameras or disposable cameras with flash due to the knocks and bumps and the damp conditions underground.
